Selected details of KEEP taken from the partnership agreement

Purpose

To strengthen the evangelistic outreach of partnering churches by teaching English conversation classes.

Qualifications of personnel

All short-term workers must be born again believers who attend a local evangelical church in Canada or the USA. They must have one year of some kind of regular ministry in their local church, verifiable by their pastor. This ministry can include anything from Sunday school teaching to ushering. We are looking for evidence of commitment to a local church--after all, the ministry here in Japan will be with a local church.

Personnel need to have a deep concern for sharing the good news of Christ with non-Christians and an ability to communicate basic Bible teachings in simple English.

Gender and Marital Status

The program is open to either single women or men (no couples at this point in time).

Education

While no theological education or professional degree (such as M.Div. or TESOL) besides college level education is required, personnel are expected to demonstrate willingness and patience with friendliness in communicating and conducting English classes in simple English.

English as the mother tongue is required.

Though no knowledge of the Japanese language is required, personnel should have an interest in learning as much Japanese as possible once in Japan. This would include learning to read the two Japanese phonetic scripts of hiragana and katakana.

Teaching Locations

The classes are held at three churches: Kashiwa EFC (Chiba-ken), Yashio EFC (Saitama-ken), and Kawaguchi EFC (Saitama-ken). The teacher is at these churches one or two days a week.

Housing

A small, furnished apartment is arranged by the partnering Japanese churches.

Finances: remuneration

Monthly salary for a single worker is 120,000 yen (about CAD$1400/USD$1300).

Monthly housing rental up to 60,000 yen (about CAD$650) is covered by KEEP and is not taken from the teacher's salary.

Finances: teaching expenses

All expenses for teaching supplies and transportation to/from classes at the churches are covered by KEEP.

Finances: teacher's responsibility

  • Round trip airfare from North America to Japan.
  • Utilities, if not included in rental provided by the partnering churches (about CAD$250 per month).
